Gem 1873 Open 3 Three Cent Nickel
1873 3CN Open 3 MS65 PCGS. The Open 3 1873 is a true sleeper. The Guide Book reports a mintage of 783,000 pieces, and prices the issue as only a slightly better date. Yet both NGC and PCGS have certified relatively few pieces in Mint State. Gems are unquestionably rare. Presumably, the published mintage is incorrect, and includes a large delivery of Closed 3 pieces. No Open 3 proofs were struck. This is a lustrous and lightly toned Gem with pleasing surfaces and a crisp strike.
