1875 Three Cent Nickel, MS67
FS-301, Misplaced Date Variety
Tied for Finest Certified

1875 3CN Misplaced Date, FS-301, MS67 PCGS. Three cent nickel mintages fell almost every year after 1865, when the series was introduced as a substitute for the three cent silver coins driven out of circulation by the Civil War. The theory underpinning the denomination's authorization seems logical, but the coins entered into a marketplace already overburdened by one and two cent pieces. Undoubtedly, the inception of the Shield nickel in 1866 had a further impact on reducing demand for the three cent nickel. When silver coinage began to circulate again in the mid-1870s, three cent nickel coins became even less desirable. For that reason, only 228,000 pieces were struck in 1875, by far the lowest production total to that point.

This incredible Superb Gem features an errant 1 protruding from Liberty's neck. The Cherrypickers' Guide remarks that this is probably the most available variety in the series, but it nevertheless commands a premium as a dramatically misplaced date variant. Cartwheel luster swirls over brilliant silvery surfaces that are free of mentionable imperfections. Strongly rendered with full delineation of the vertical lines on the denomination. The upper and lower wreath elements show moderate die rust. Among the finest at both services. Population (all varieties): 4 in 67, 0 finer (11/15).
