Description

1881 3CN MS66+ PCGS. CAC. The Mint inexplicably struck more than 1 million three cent nickels in 1881 despite no contemporary interest in the denomination by either the public or the channels of commerce. Collectors were likewise disinterested, and few high-grade pieces were saved. This exceptionally well-preserved example survived with nearly untoned and pristine surfaces, as well as a needle-sharp strike. It is the sole Premium Gem at PCGS with the Plus designation. Population: 44 in 66 (1 in 66+), 8 finer (8/15).(Registry values: N1793)
