Description

1883 Three Cent Nickel, MS65
A Circulation-Strike Rarity

1883 3CN MS65 CACG. Most surviving examples of the 1883 three-cent nickel issue are proofs, while circulation strikes are rarely encountered in higher grades. The reason is simple: contemporary collectors preferred proof examples so few Mint State pieces were saved at the end of the 19th century. Production was also a factor as just 4,000 circulation strikes were produced with little interest at the time. For comparison, Mint records indicate that a substantial production of more than 6,000 proofs occurred in 1883. This Mint State piece is boldly detailed with brilliant light gray luster that displays intense blue and champagne toning.(Registry values: N2998)
