Description

1885 Three Cent Nickel, AU50
Lightly Circulated Key Date

1885 3CN AU50 PCGS. The 1885 three cent nickel is among those curious American numismatic issues that we consider "upside-down," where the circulation-strike mintage is smaller -- far smaller, in this case -- than the proof mintage, 1,000 pieces versus 3,790, respectively. This makes the 1885 business strike the key to the series and a highly pursued issue in grades approaching Mint State. This AU50 example displays grayish-gold patina with light, even wear on the high points and some buildup in the obverse peripheral devices. Population: 4 in 50, 58 finer (6/14).(Registry values: N991)
