Description

1885 Three Cent Nickel, MS64
Lowest Mintage of the Series

1885 3CN MS64 PCGS. The Mint made only a token effort of 1,000 three cent nickels for circulation in 1885, with most collectors satisfied with a proof of the date. The proof mintage outnumbered business strikes more than 3 to 1. This softly lustrous near-Gem is obviously a circulation strike, with thick mint frost and lilac-gray toning and some deep-gray freckles. Sharply struck and nicely preserved, such pieces are scarce and highly-sought by specialists in the series. Population: 16 in 64, 30 finer (3/16).(Registry values: N1793)
