Description

Elusive Business Strike 1885
Three Cent Nickel, MS66

1885 3CN MS66 PCGS. The proof and business-strike emissions are topsy-turvy on this issue, with 3,790 proofs measuring up against only 1,000 business strikes. So it comes as no surprise that business strikes are much more desired than proofs of this date, and are also incredibly rare in high grades. The present coin more than fits the bill. It is unquestionably a business strike, as the nonexistent denticles from 9 o'clock to 1:30 attest. Most of the reverse denticulation is also absent, and yet the surfaces are pleasingly well struck in the centers. The surface texture is frosty, with glimpses of mint-green, gold, and lavender. Only faint evidence of contact is seen. Population: 8 in 66, 2 finer (2/09).(Registry values: N2998)

Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 275G, PCGS# 3753, Greysheet# 2786)
