Description

    1885 Three Cent Nickel, MS66+
Series Key, Only Two Finer at PCGS

1885 3CN MS66+ PCGS. The 1885 three cent nickel is the key to the business strikes of the series, struck in the amount of a meager 1,000 pieces. By this point in the series, the increasing acceptance and utility of the five cent nickel, introduced in 1867, and the smaller bronze Indian cents, had made the unusual three cent denomination redundant.

The importance of the present offering can scarcely be overemphasized among series collectors and specialists. Even AU58 examples of this issue, on the rare occasions they are auctioned, bring in the four-figure range. At the Gem level PCGS has seen about a dozen submissions, with another dozen in MS66 and finer grades. This MS66+ is the sole example so graded, and it is surpassed by only two grading events in MS67 at PCGS (9/13). The last relevant auction record we find for this issue is our FUN Signature (Heritage, 1/2010), where lot 2452 was an MS66 PCGS-CAC example that brought $29,900. This MS66+ PCGS example may represent the finest piece that will cross the auction block for many years.

Generous luster proceeds from both sides of this Premium Gem, which shows surfaces ranging from silver-gray to golden-pinkish, still presenting as scarcely toned. The strike is needle-sharp throughout, and there are simply no distractions on this superlative coin. Population: 11 (1 in 66+), 2 finer (9/13).(Registry values: N2998) (NGC ID# 275G, PCGS# 3753)
