    1877 Three Cent Nickel, PR64
    Proof-Only Necessity for Date Collectors

1877 3CN PR64 NGC. Mass hoarding of silver coins came to an abrupt end in 1876, when small change returned into circulation -- the beginning of the end for redundant coinage such as the three cent piece. Circulation strikes ceased in 1877 and 1878 for the three cent nickel, with only minor mintages thereafter except in 1881 when a last-gasp production of a million pieces was achieved. Proofs, however, were made for collectors. Just 900 proofs were produced in 1877. This attractive example shows frosted, pearl-gray devices set against satiny, lilac fields with little reflectivity (typical of later proofs in the series). The near-Gem surfaces are remarkably free of marks or spots for excellent appeal. Since no business strikes were produced, this proof-only issue is a necessity to complete the date set.
