    Description

1851 Three Cent Silver, MS64 Prooflike
    Sole Prooflike Example Certified
    From the Garrett Collection

1851 3CS MS64 Prooflike NGC. Ex: Garrett. The light reddish-gold surfaces of this near-Gem Prooflike example exhibit well-struck design elements, including uniformly strong detail in the lines of the obverse shield. Some of the reverse stars show weakness in the centers. Scattered toning spots appear over both sides, larger on the reverse.

Population Data (9/15): This near-Gem is sole example of this issue designated as Prooflike.

Heritage Commentary: While NGC assigns this coin MS64 Prooflike, it was designated "Choice Proof" in the October 1980 sale of the Garrett Collection by Bowers and Ruddy. Breen, in his Encyclopedia of United States and Colonial Proof Coins, writes of the 1851 three cent silver piece that: "a small number of Proofs were struck on June 30, 1851, the effective date of the legislative act which authorized this denomination." The Bowers and Ruddy catalog, in referring to the Maris coin that Breen considered to be a proof, states: "three unquestioned Proofs are known to exist today, certainly placing it in the forefront of American rarities of this type of manufacture." We do not consider the present offering to be a proof, but we agree with the Prooflike designation.

Provenance: Obtained by T. Harrison Garrett from the 1886 sale of the Maris Collection held in Philadelphia by Stan V. Henkels; Garrett Collection Part III (Bowers and Ruddy, 10/1980), lot 1549; purchased from Stack's (5/1995), lot 48.(Registry values: N991) (NGC ID# 22YX, PCGS# 3664)
