    Description

    1851 Three Cent, MS66+
    Condition Rarity

1851 3CS MS66+ PCGS. CAC. Although a huge mintage of nearly 5.5 million pieces was struck to replace vanishing Seated Liberty coinage (which was widely hoarded), the first-year trime was not preserved in high grades in any consistent or forward-thinking way. As a result, Premium Gem examples are scarce and Superb Gems are rare. This MS66+ example walks the line between the two grades. A hard-to-find full strike and satiny luster appear on smooth, softly glowing surfaces. A bit of reddish-gold toning visits the unmarked fields and devices. PCGS has certified just two MS66+ examples, and 13 pieces finer (2/14).(Registry values: N1793) (NGC ID# 22YX, PCGS# 3664)

I received the catalog and was very impressed with its color illustrations, descriptions and attractive layout. (It has better production values than the New York houses.)
