    Description

    1854 Three Cent Silver, Well-Struck MS66
    An Important Condition Rarity

1854 3CS MS66 PCGS. CAC. The lustrous surfaces of this Premium Gem yield soft greenish-gray and lavender toning, along with a splash of yellow-gold on the upper right of the star. Deeper bluish-green and lavender cascade over the reverse, imbued with whispers of orange-gold. The design elements are well-struck throughout, including the two lines framing the star, the lines within the shield, the veins in the leaves above the III denomination and the arrow feathers below it. This is significant because the Type Two design type typically shows weak, uneven definition. A couple of the reverse star centers are soft. Three obverse die cracks are visible, as are clash marks in the centers of both sides.

Population Data (8/15): PCGS reports 10 pieces grading MS66 and two coins finer. NGC shows four Premium Gems and two finer.

Heritage Commentary: Regular-issue Type Two three cent silver pieces were first produced in 1854 and were composed of 900 fine silver at a lower weight. This design type consists of two extra outer rims around the obverse star, an olive branch above the III denomination, and three arrows bound by a ribbon under it. This date is an important condition rarity in MS66 and finer.

    Provenance: Purchased from Pinnacle Rarities (8/2005).(Registry values: N2998) (NGC ID# 22Z3, PCGS# 3670)
