    Delightful 1854 Three Cent Silver, MS67 ★
    The Finest Certified

1854 3CS MS67 ★ NGC. In 1854 the design of the three cent silver piece was modified to include two lines around the obverse star. Also, the metallic composition was changed to .900 silver and .100 copper. Trimes of this style were produced from 1854 through 1858 inclusive, and are referred to as Type or Variety Two. Of all three silver three cent types, the 1854-1858 style is the most difficult to locate. Few Uncirculated pieces were saved, so Mint State examples are quite rare today.
MS67 is the highest grade assigned to an 1854 three cent silver by NGC and PCGS; the two services have graded two Superb Gems each (10/09). The MS67 offering in this lot is the only 1854 given NGC's Star designation. A melange of orange-gold, sky-blue, purple, and crimson covers the obverse, while champagne, violet-purple, lavender, and sky-blue adorns the reverse. A solid strike delivers virtually full definition to the design elements, an unusual attribute for the usually weak Type Two. Immaculately preserved lustrous surfaces round out the coin's delightful eye appeal. Light clash marks are visible on the obverse, as is a spindly crack in the right field.(Registry values: N4719) (NGC ID# 22Z3, PCGS# 3670)
