Description

1856 Silver Three Cent, MS66
Condition Census Quality

1856 3CS MS66 PCGS. CAC. The 1856 silver three cent remains marginally available in grades through MS64, but Gems are rarely seen and anything finer is an extreme challenge to locate. The leading certification services each list only five examples in MS66 (one in MS66+ at PCGS), with none finer (5/15). Thus, the currently offered example is firmly among the finest known of this conditionally challenging Philadelphia issue. Moreover, it is only the second Premium Gem 1856 we have ever offered at auction. The other piece, also CAC-endorsed, was offered in our May 2015 sale of the Gardner Collection, Part III, where it realized $23,500. This piece is not quite as vividly toned as that example, although the technical merit is comparable. Both sides are well-struck and display satiny luster beneath a dusting of faintly speckled olive toning.(Registry values: N4719)
