    Description

Scarce Gem 1856 Three Cent Silver

1856 3CS MS 65 PCGS. The Act of March 3, 1853 changed the composition of the three cent silver from 75% silver, 25% copper to 90% silver, 10% copper. To denote this change, Longacre added two extra outlines to the obverse star, as well as an olive branch and a bundle of arrows within the C on the reverse. This Type Two design was used from 1854-1858 and, since mintages were limited, these issues are the most difficult to obtain for type purposes. A nicely impressed example, the surfaces display above average definition and modest, yet flashy cartwheel effects. Clashmarks are noted on both sides, particularly within the Roman numerals on the reverse, but there are no grade-limiting abrasions. Lightly toned in golden-apricot iridescence. Population: 11 in 65, only 1 finer (10/00).
    From the Bob Bisanz U.S. Type Set. (NGC ID# 22Z5, PCGS# 3672)

    Weight: 0.75 grams

    Metal: 90% Silver, 10% Copper
