Description

Superlative MS67 1858 Three Cent Silver

1858 3CS MS67NGC. Rarely is a Type Two three cent silver seen in such a superior state of preservation. One would think more would exist since more than 1.6 million pieces were produced of this date alone, but attrition and melting obviously took a heavy toll. This is a curious coin when closely examined. The striking details are unusually sharp, almost full, which is most unusual for a Type Two. The obverse is, in fact, fully detailed. The upper part of the reverse shows just a bit of softness, suggesting that die might have been slightly out of alignment. Another obverse / reverse difference is apparent: the obverse fields show heavy die striations which have imparted prooflikeness on that side, while the reverse shows none of these striations. Both sides are richly toned in shades of rose and teal, and the only mark worthy of mention is on the reverse to the left of the denomination. Census: 14 in 67, 0 finer (7/08).(Registry values: N4719)
