Description

1858 Three Cent Silver, MS67
Tied for Third Finest PCGS Type Two

1858 3CS MS67 PCGS. Just two finer MS68 examples of the Type Two design are certified at PCGS, being an 1854 and another 1858. The three cent silver series was introduced in 1851 and continued through 1873, using three design variants known today as Type One, Type Two, and Type Three. They differ in the outline around the central obverse device, as well as the metallurgical composition. The Type One coins were 75% silver while later issues were 90% silver. There was no frame around the star on the early issues through 1853, a double frame around the 1854 to 1858 issues, and a single frame around the star on later issues. This Superb Gem has a crisp strike, much sharper than usual, with delicate gold toning over its frosty silver luster. It is a beauty to behold. Population: 14 in 67 (2 in 67+), 1 finer (11/21).(Registry values: N4719)
