    Description

1861 MS 68 PCGS. An extraordinary three-cent silver piece. Everything seems to have fallen into place on this single coin. The strike is unusually bold with sharply defined features on each side. The only area that shows any signs of softness are the radial lines on a couple of the stars, otherwise fully struck. The most dominant feature on this coin is its thick mint frost. It overwhelms all of the other components that make up the grade of the coin. The fields are bright, even through the soft patina, and we get some idea why this is so when the coin is closely examined. Magnification reveals that the dies were heavily lapped in the mint, perhaps excessively so, as evidenced by the mostly effaced feathers on the upper arrow shaft on the reverse and the fine die striations in the obverse fields. This die polishing must have erased all traces of clash marks also, as none are seen on either side--quite an unusual attribute itself. The surfaces are nearly perfectly preserved and the coin's overall visual impact is as impressive as one would expect from a coin in this rarely bestowed grade. Population: 1 in 68, none are finer (3/95). (NGC ID# 22ZA, PCGS# 3679)
