Description

1865 Three Cent Silver, MS66
Rarely Found So Well-Preserved

1865 3CS MS66 PCGS. CAC. Intermixed shades of blue, green, and violet paint largely unabraded surfaces on each side. The horizontal shield lines, leaves, and stars show a touch of indistinctness. Noticeable die clashing appears around the star and within the denomination. The compelling eye appeal is recognized by CAC. Housed in a green label holder.

Population Data (8/15): There are just nine Premium Gems at PCGS (one in MS66+) with four coins finer. NGC reports 17 MS66 submissions and five examples finer.

Heritage Commentary: Like the issues that immediately precede and follow it, the 1865 enjoys a small mintage. Only 8,000 coins were struck, and approximately 400 pieces survive in all grades. Nearly 40% of those extant are graded across the various Uncirculated levels, but only a tiny fraction of the certified population are this well-preserved.

Provenance: Purchased from RARCOA (9/1996).(Registry values: N2998)

Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 22ZF, PCGS# 3685, Greysheet# 3632)
