    1866 Three Cent Silver, MS67
    Fully Struck, Colorful Patina

1866 3CS MS67 PCGS. CAC. Ex: Gardner. Before the present lot appeared in our 2010 Orlando FUN Signature, its consignor had purchased the coin as a proof. With only one pair of dies used to strike 725 proofs and 22,000 strikes for circulation, there is a continuum of reflectivity that makes it difficult to differentiate between late-state proofs and early-state business strikes. This Superb Gem is among the finest examples known of this low-mintage date. PCGS has seen ten submissions in MS67 with two finer; NGC has seen four in the same grade with one finer (9/15). The surfaces are richly toned in swaths of sea-green, plum-red, and cobalt-blue. The strike is unusually strong for the type, showing definition comparable to (or perhaps even exceeding) that seen on proofs. A slight hint of cartwheel luster appears in the fields, but each side is strongly reflective, despite the multiple layers of toning.
Ex: FUN Signature (Heritage, 1/2010), lot 3667, which realized $14,950.(Registry values: N2998)

The marketing was exceptional from the photos to the ads in Civil War Times and North South Trader for the cross over people!!! I have had many emails from my Civil War collecting fraternity that saw these and I saw them at the national show in Nashville/Franklin in early December.
