    Description

    1867 Three Cent Silver, MS65
    Virtually Unobtainable in Higher Grades

1867 3CS MS65 PCGS. CAC. Each side offers a blend of golden-gray, rose-violet, and ice-blue patina, accounting for the excellent eye appeal recognized by CAC. Frosty luster issues from beneath the toning, further enhancing the aesthetic quality. The shield lines and stars are crisply delineated, while the olive leaves show the usual strike incompleteness. Void of clash marks and detracting abrasions.

Population Data (8/15): There are three in MS66 at PCGS and four submissions finer. NGC shows eight Premium Gems and three finer.

Heritage Commentary: The Philadelphia Mint reached a new low in three cent silver production in 1867. Only 4,000 coins were struck, and the average survivor grades just shy of MS61. Gene Gardner purchased this Gem in 1996 and was only able to upgrade to an MS66 in 2010, attesting to just how challenging the issue can be in high grades.

    Provenance: W.R. Walling Collection (Stack's, 3/1996), lot 191.(Registry values: N2998) (NGC ID# 22ZH, PCGS# 3687)

    Weight: 0.75 grams

    Metal: 90% Silver, 10% Copper
