Description

1867 Three Cent Silver, MS66
Prooflike Surfaces

1867 3CS MS66 NGC. These silver coins, which once flooded the channels of American commerce, disappeared amid the hoarding of gold and silver during the Civil War. By 1863, the Mint had ceased mass production of these diminutive pieces, striking small batches every year just so they would have a few on hand when needed to pay off depositors. In 1867, only 4,000 coins were minted. Premium Gems are rare and nearly impossible to surpass in grade.

This well-struck example displays prooflike tendencies, with glassy fields and moderately frosted motifs. Mostly brilliant surfaces showcase glints of original golden color, and there are just a couple of ticks around the star. Census: 4 in 66 (1 in 66+), 4 finer (2/24).
