    Description

    1869 Three Cent Silver, MS64
Frosty, Brilliant With Light Rim Toning

1869 3CS MS64 PCGS. CAC. This near-Gem is thickly frosted and mostly brilliant with delicate olive and gold toning near the peripheries on each side. The strike falls just short of full, with two stars at the lower reverse showing incomplete centers. Otherwise, the shield, leaves, and fletchings display pinpoint definition. The surfaces are minimally marked for the assigned numeric grade and display splendid eye appeal.

Population Data (8/15): PCGS reports 16 Choice examples and nine pieces finer, while NGC shows 12 Gems and 17 in higher grades.

Heritage Commentary: When Gene Gardner purchased this coin at auction nearly 20 years ago, the catalog description brazenly asserted: "A specialist in silver three cent pieces, no matter his or her financial resources, could not in a lifetime of aggressive bidding complete a set of gem Mint State trimes of 1863-1872." Gene Gardner defied that assertion, completing just such a set nearly twice over.

    Provenance: Herbert D. Spencer Collection (Bowers and Merena, 6/1996), lot 270.(Registry values: N1793) (NGC ID# 22ZK, PCGS# 3689)

    Weight: 0.75 grams

    Metal: 90% Silver, 10% Copper
