Description

1869 Three Cent Silver, MS67
One of Two Finest at NGC
Rare Repunched Date

1869 3CS MS67 NGC. Breen-2959. Repunched 69, "Very Rare" per Breen (1988). The tumultuous Civil War years resulted in a sharp drop in silver trime issues beginning in 1863 and lasting through the end of the business strike series in 1872. The 1869 circulation-strike mintage was only 4,500 pieces, making the issue extremely rare in Mint State. The present Superb Gem offering is one of the two finest seen at NGC (7/13). Both sides are awash with intense luster, and each exhibits needle-sharp design elements. Close inspection reveals near-pristine surfaces. The synergistic combination of these attributes yields stunning eye appeal. An unobtrusive mark to the right of the 9 is mentioned solely to help pedigree the coin.
