    Description

    1872 Three Cent Silver, MS65
An Important Key Date in the Series
    An Infrequent Opportunity

1872 3CS MS65 NGC. The lustrous surfaces of this Gem display soft lavender-rose, sky-blue, and mint-green patination on the obverse. This color palette yields deeper shades on the reverse. The design elements are well-struck, and there are no marks worthy of individual mention.

Population Data (8/15): NGC reports eight in MS65 and eight finer. PCGS shows three Gems and seven finer. The meager 104 submissions in all grades (some likely resubmissions) certified by the two major services attest to its rarity in all grade levels.

Heritage Commentary: This year saw a production of just 1,000 circulation strikes, the lowest and final year of the silver three cent series in business-strike format. The population data indicate that most surviving examples are in Mint State through near-Gem. Our Auction Archives show 68 offerings of the 1872 in all grades by the major auction firms over the past 20 years or so, a number of which are multiple appearances. This is an infrequent opportunity for the specialist to acquire this important key date in the series.

    Provenance: Purchased from Simco Numismatics (9/1996).(Registry values: N2998) (NGC ID# 22ZN, PCGS# 3693)

    Weight: 0.75 grams

    Metal: 90% Silver, 10% Copper
