1854 Three Dollar Gold Piece, MS65
    First Year of the Denomination

1854 $3 MS65 PCGS. CAC. Expectations for the three dollar gold piece were obviously high when they were first issued, as the mintage for this date totaled 138,600 coins, the highest mintage of any date during the entire series through 1889. In fact, this was the only date with a production that broke the 100,000-coin barrier. This date is the first year of issue and it is a single year design variant, with small letters in DOLLARS on the reverse. Beginning in 1855, and continuing through 1889, the letters were much larger. Numerous Mint State examples are known, including a few Gems like this example. It is sharply struck with frosty luster and brilliant yellow-gold surfaces. Only a few tiny abrasions are evident in the fields on each side. Population: 29 in 65 (3 in 65+), 11 finer. CAC: 12 in 65, 2 finer (2/18). (NGC ID# 25M3, PCGS# 7969)

    Weight: 5.02 grams
