    Description

    1854 Gold Three Dollar, MS65
    Rarely Seen This Fine

1854 $3 MS65 PCGS. The 1854 three dollar gold piece's reputation as a common date becomes almost irrelevant at the Gem grade level where the issue is conditionally rare. Of some 12 coins in the Smithsonian Institution, the finest grades just MS63, per Garrett and Guth. The present piece is exceptional, suitable for a high-end date or type collection. The strike is sharply executed on the obverse portrait, the reverse wreath, and even the bowknot. The reverse lettering and motifs show almost none of the "halo effect" typically seen on examples of this type, and the frosty yellow-gold surfaces are devoid of any major abrasions. Only a few stray lines detected with a loupe preclude an even finer grade from PCGS. If a first-year coin is desired for type representation, this Gem 1854 is an ideal choice. Population: 24 in 65, 10 finer (7/15).(Registry values: N4719) (NGC ID# 25M3, PCGS# 7969)

    Weight: 5.02 grams

    Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
