Softly Frosted MS66 1854 Three Dollar Gold
Only One Graded Finer at NGC
1854 $3 MS66 NGC. The first-year 1854 three dollar gold
pieces are collected as a type coin, along with the high-mintage
1874 and 1878 issues, but series specialists know that the issue is
technically a one-year subtype, with a smaller font used for the
DOLLAR denomination than those that follow. Even though the issue
had a high mintage exceeding 138,000 pieces, few survivors today
ever achieve the lofty Premium Gem grade of the present example.
Both sides appear free of even the most picayune abrasions, a sign
that this piece has been carefully stored ever since its
acquisition. The surfaces have soft, satin luster with medium
amber-gold coloration. The strike is impeccable, although a hint of
softness appears, only at the I in LIBERTY on the headband and the
feather directly above. A marvelous type coin suited for the finest
set, a special prize for first-year-of-type collectors. Census: 8
