1854-D Three Dollar, AU Details1854-D $3 -- Altered Surfaces -- Genuine PCGS. AU Details. When a collector stops to think about it, the 1854-D three dollar gold issue has much in common with the 1851-O three cent silver issue. Both are odd-denomination issues; both are branch mint issues from the first year of a new series; and both are one-offs, struck only in the first year and not followed up with later strikings in the series.
The differences, however, are crucial. While the 1851-O three cent silver saw a moderate mintage that makes it occasionally available even in high grade, nothing could be further from the truth where the 1854-D three is concerned. The low mintage of 1,120 pieces was struck at a time when few collectors even knew about mintmarks, much less collected according to their presence or absence on coins, and few were set aside for posterity. This AU PCGS example has surfaces that are a bit too bright, but the alteration mentioned on the insert is not immediately apparent. Surprisingly well struck.
