    Description

Choice AU 1854-D Three Dollar Piece
    Georgia Gold, Odd Denomination

1854-D $3 AU55 NGC. Variety 1-A. The three dollar gold piece saw the beginning of its useful life as the Dahlonega Mint was nearing its end. The Georgia gold rush was all but tapped out by 1854, and demand was low for workhorse denominations such as the half eagle, never mind a new and strange coin such as the three dollar gold. A mintage of 1,120 pieces, all 1854-D, was the only issuance of the odd denomination from any gold-only U.S. Mint. As a result, the issue is highly prized among collectors of Southern gold issues and never available enough to meet demand in any grade; better circulated and Mint State coins in particular experience exceptional price pressure.
The color of this Choice AU example is primarily lemon-gold with a degree of green-gold for an overtone. Luster swirls slightly but is a trifle brighter than a collector might anticipate. The striking characteristics match the signature for the 1854-D issue: better at the centers than the margins, where the obverse shows proper dentilation only from 3 to 7 o'clock. None of the usual grease stains or bold planchet defects are in evidence; only minor encrustation is noted within the letters of a handful of words, such as DOLLARS and AMERICA. Marks are generally wispy and always grade-consistent. NGC records list a nominal 39 certification events in finer grades (11/11), but this figure is so inflated by resubmissions as to be almost meaningless.(Registry values: N7079) (NGC ID# 25M4, PCGS# 7970)
