1854-D Three Dollar, AU55
High-End CAC Example
Sought-After Dahlonega Issue

1854-D $3 AU55 PCGS. CAC. Winter 1-A. When the three dollar denomination debuted in 1854, coinage occurred primarily at the Philadelphia Mint (where it would largely stay in following years), although sets of dies were also shipped to New Orleans and Dahlonega. New Orleans would strike 24,000 coins, and Dahlonega 1,120. Neither branch mint would strike the denomination again, rendering both the 1854-O and 1854-D one-year type coins for their respective mints.

The 1854-D is one of the most famous Dahlonega gold issues in United States coinage, and it is a scarce coin in any grade desired. Southern gold authority Doug Winter, in Gold Coins of the Dahlonega Mint, fourth edition (2023) estimates the entire survivorship at only 125 to 150 coins, with merely a handful in properly graded Mint State. For most collectors, a high-end AU coin represents an ideal acquisition, albeit still a challenging one.

Surviving examples exist in two different die states. The earlier state shows the border dentils mostly full and sharp, and it is a very rare die state with, according to Winter, fewer than 10 pieces likely known. The later die state, represented by the current coin, shows weakness on the border dentils, especially from 7 to 3 o'clock on the obverse and 2 to 3 o'clock on the reverse. This is apparent on the current coin, though the central devices exhibit excellent sharpness, even on the wreath bowknot. Natural olive-gold patina retains hints of luster in the protected areas of the fields, and no major abrasions are evident. Overall, this is an outstanding example of the rare Dahlonega three dollar gold piece. Population: 25 in 55, 16 finer. CAC: 11 in 55, 5 finer (3/25).(Registry values: N7079)
