    Near-Mint 1854-D Three Dollar
    Legendary D-Mint Issue
    Virtually Unobtainable in Finer Grade

1854-D $3 AU58 NGC. CAC. Variety 1-A. As the only D-mint issue in the three dollar gold series, the 1854-D is a desirable coin that is high on the want list of every gold collector. Unfortunately, the issue's paltry original mintage of 1,120 pieces and poor survival rate mean that only the most affluent collectors will be able to obtain a high-quality representative. The total number of 1854-D three dollar gold pieces extant is probably no more than 65-75 pieces, most of them grading between VF20 and XF40. Above the Choice XF level the 1854-D is a major rarity, and we have only handled a few examples in AU58 over the past couple of decades (along with a couple of extremely rare Mint State coins). The last AU58 NGC example we handled was in our Long Beach Signature (Heritage, 5/2009), which brought $44,562.50, a piece of similar technical and aesthetic quality to the present example.
This is another "old friend come back to revisit," after more than a decade away. Bold strike definition appears around the peripheries, unusual for this issue which is normally weak in those areas. The surfaces are original and appealing, bathed in orange-gold color with tinges of crimson patina scattered about. Traces of frosty luster adhere to both sides, and the overall definition, while typically soft over Liberty's brow and the reverse ribbon, is sharper than normal for the issue. The few abrasions are small and well-scattered, although a group of small indents in the reverse field above the S in DOLLARS provides a pedigree marker. A pleasing coin for the near-Mint State grade, virtually unobtainable any finer, and a legendary issue that always performs well at auction.
Ex: Long Beach Signature (Heritage, 2/2001), lot 6909.
