    1854-D Three Dollar, AU58
    Single-Year Dahlonega Issue
    Exceptionally Clean Surfaces

1854-D $3 AU58 NGC. The mintage of 1,120 three dollar gold pieces struck in Dahlonega in 1854 is certainly a tiny figure, but there are reasons for such a minuscule production, as pointed out by Paul Green in a Numismatic News article in July 2008:

"First, Dahlonega rarely, if ever, made a lot of coins. It was a branch mint that was no first-class operation. Rather, it was closer to the frontier mint it had been when it opened for business in the 1830s. Even so, the 1854-D's 1,120 mintage was a little low even by Dahlonega standards.

"It must be remembered that at the time a $3 gold piece was a new and untested idea. It does not mean that by definition there were going to be low totals, but it can mean that a place like Dahlonega was going to go slowly when it came to mintages since they were not sure anyone would like or want to use the coin."

Indeed, the three dollar denomination did not catch on, not only in Georgia but nationwide. After an initially large production in Philadelphia, the three dollar gold denomination never again exceeded 1854 mintage levels. New Orleans was also a one-year production for this denomination with 24,000 pieces struck. The only other branch mint to strike threes was San Francisco, produced in 1855, 1856, 1857, and 1860 (plus the unique 1870-S).

This near-Mint example is exceptionally well-preserved for the issue. Just the slightest hint of friction is seen over each side. Generous amounts of mint luster can be seen surrounding the devices, and there are no singularly important or mentionable abrasions present. The coin's yellow-gold color has taken on just the slightest accent of reddish patina. Census: 24 in 58, 9 finer (3/13).(Registry values: N7079) (NGC ID# 25M4, PCGS# 7970)
