    Description

Important AU 58 1854-D Three Dollar

1854-D $3 AU 58 PCGS. A bit better struck than the first example, especially at the centers. On this piece, there is a good amount of detail visible on the hair of Liberty while the wreath is uncharacteristically bold. The surfaces have toned to a deep orange-gold and there is a considerable amount of mint luster. There is a just a touch of wear noted and it is mostly confined to the relief details. This impressive '54-D is easily Condition Census for the issue. The only comparable example we have handled was lot 7664 in our 1999 FUN sale, and that piece brought $57,500.
In addition to the strike characteristics described above, there are a number of other diagnostics seen on all examples of this issue. On the obverse, the U in UNITED is always weaker than the other letters in this word and there is a prominent clashmark at the throat of Liberty, along with a less noticeable one behind the headdress. On the reverse, there are clashmarks within the wreath. As a result of die polishing, the right bow knot is separated and the leaf to the left of the 1 in the date is detached.
    From the Chestatee Collection. (NGC ID# 25M4, PCGS# 7970)
