    Description

Rare and Important 1854-D Three Dollar, AU55

1854-D $3 AU55 PCGS. Only 1,120 pieces were struck of this major Three Dollar rarity, the only issue of this denomination struck in the Dahlonega Mint. Very scarce in all grades with only 85-95 pieces believed extant in all grades and a mere 14-16 coins estimated to exist today in AU condition. Sharply struck, good portions of original mint luster are seen over each side with rich reddish patina throughout. There are three surface flaws on the obverse that will help identify this piece: a check-shaped die crack extends from Liberty's forehead into the left obverse field, the diagnostic clashmark is seen in front of Liberty's neck, and there is a small, vertical abrasion just behind the nose. (NGC ID# 25M4, PCGS# 7970)

    Weight: 5.02 grams

    Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
