Description

Almost Uncirculated 1854-O Three Dollar
The Single New Orleans Mint Issue

1854-O $3 AU50 NGC. A popular issue as the only O-mint three dollar and a series-opening type coin, the 1854-O was produced to the extent of only 24,000 pieces. In theory, four mints could have struck 1854-dated threes, as Dahlonega also made a token issue of 1854-Ds before backing out of the denomination, and San Francisco was ready for coinage in this year, as well. This appealing AU 1854-O shows medium orange-gold surfaces with a few thin obverse marks and grade-consistent wear. The soft strike on the first three digits of the date and the mintmark is not uncommon, and a small die crack joins some of the lower peripheral elements on the reverse.(Registry values: N2998)
