Description

1854-O Three Dollar, AU58
Sole New Orleans Issue in the Series

1854-O $3 AU58 NGC. Winter 1. The surprisingly elusive early die state of the single 1854-O die pair, showing no lapping on the ribbon ends. This New Orleans issue comes from a mintage of 24,000 pieces. In the context of the series, that is a fairly substantial production total, but the vast majority of these coins entered circulated and did not survive the economic changes of the Civil War in the South. Today, it is scarce in high AU grades and rare in Mint State, and collector demand is high due to this being the only New Orleans issue in the series.

The present example displays some field reflectivity throughout, with brass-gold patina and well-defined devices that show only light wear. Scattered minor abrasions are not bothersome for the grade. NGC has graded 25 numerically finer examples (10/25).
