    Description

    Well-Produced AU58 1854-O Three Dollar

1854-O $3 AU58 NGC. The first-year (and only-year) O-mint three dollar issue, the 1854-O was produced in a decent amount of 24,000 pieces. That quantity pales beside the large P-mint production of 138,618 business strikes, but it appears generous in comparison to the tiny Dahlonega production of 1,120 pieces. Although the San Francisco Mint opened in 1854, it would strike the three dollar denomination for the first time in 1855.
The 1854-O threes circulated widely in the antebellum South, abetted by New Orleans' position as a prominent trading center of the era. Mint State pieces are rare today, and the average certified piece is apt to average Choice XF or thereabouts. This gleaming near-Mint specimen displays medium yellow-orange surfaces with only light high point rub and no singular abrasions. The weak strike details on the lower reverse at the bow and ribbon are characteristic of many examples, but the piece overall is well-produced. NGC has seen 18 submissions finer (1/11).
