    Description

Rare Mint State 1854-O Three Dollar Gold

1854-O $3 MS 60 NGC. Last sold as lot 1888 in David Akers' May 1998 sale of the John Jay Pittman Collection (Part Two) where it realized $15,400. It was described there as follows:
"Lustrous and very sharply struck with attractive medium greenish-gold color. Weak letters in the obverse legend as well as in the denomination; the date is weak also. The denticles at the left side of the reverse are very thin with considerable space between them. All of these characteristics just described are a function of considerable die lapping which is also evident in the bows of the ribbon which are completely detached. Numerous planchet irregularities are noted by the bottom of the hair near the second A in AMERICA as well as in the center of the reverse around DOLLARS and the date. Extensive die cracks run through the mintmark and the ends of the ribbon. Although not an especially rare date, the 1854-O is generally available only in the lower circulated grades from Very Fine to Extremely Fine. This specimen is well above average in terms of both its technical quality and its overall eye appeal. Purchased from the Melish sale (Abe Kosoff) in 1956 for $35."
    From the Ronald W. Brown Acadiana Collection. (NGC ID# 25M5, PCGS# 7971)
