    Description

    1855-S Three Dollar Gold, AU55
    Notably Scarce San Francisco Issue

1855-S $3 AU55 PCGS. Large S mintmark. A popular issue with collectors today, this San Francisco issue was of little interest to collectors and the public alike in 1855. Just 6,600 pieces were struck for circulation plus perhaps a couple of proofs, and few examples of either format survive. Hoarding of gold did not begin in earnest until 1861, meaning most coins were lost to intense service, attrition, or to the jewelry trade.

This Choice About Uncirculated survivor displays a light, wheat-gold patina, which is typical of the date due to "silver impurity" in the gold alloy. Parting acids and copper were in short supply during the early San Francisco Mint years, and the Mint was forced to "make do" while preparing planchets of standard fineness. Tiny, frictionlike abrasions are scattered over the semiprooflike fields, although the design motifs are sharply struck and relatively unabraded. Population: 11 in 55, 9 finer (7/14).(Registry values: N2998) (NGC ID# 7K5D, PCGS# 7973)

    Weight: 5.02 grams

    Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
