Description
Beautiful 1856 Three Dollar Gold, MS64
1856 $3 MS64 PCGS. In 1856 the Philadelphia Mint produced 26,010 three dollar gold pieces. This is not a small mintage by three dollar gold standards, but the date is rare in Mint State grades. The three dollar gold piece was entering its third year of production and was no longer a novelty to be saved by the public at large. Few coin collectors were active at the time, so the survival of Mint State coins of the issue was a matter of chance. In The United States $3 Gold Pieces 1854-1889, David Bowers and Douglas Winter estimate that only 90-120 examples are extant in Mint State grades. This sharply struck, near-Gem example is a rare find for the knowledgeable collector. The surfaces have wonderful luster complementing apricot-gold coloration with tinges of pinkish and lilac, and neither side reveals any mentionable distractions, as expected for the near-Gem grade. Seldom seen finer: Both NGC and PCGS have each certified only a single Gem finer (8/08).
