    Description

    1856 Three Dollar, MS64
    Seldom Offered This Fine

1856 $3 MS64 PCGS. Flashy luster over partially prooflike fields and frosted, sharply struck central elements justify the near-Gem status of this vibrant and attractive early three dollar gold piece. We note particularly strong definition on Liberty's hair for the 1856 issue, and the sharp strike carries over to the reverse where O in DOLLARS is fully brought up and the wreath elements are fully detailed. The fields show die polish lines but only a few tiny ticks, while rich-gold color displays pleasing orange accents.

The mintage of 26,010 pieces yields remarkably few near-Gem examples, and finer 1856 three dollar gold pieces are extremely rare. Survival of Mint State examples is estimated at between 90 to 120 coins in all Uncirculated grades, but most are at the lower end of the scale. PCGS reports the only five numerically finer examples. Population: 33 in 64, 5 finer (6/17).(Registry values: N4719) (NGC ID# 25M8, PCGS# 7974)

    Weight: 5.02 grams

    Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
