1856-S Three Dollar, AU53
Popular Branch Issue
1856-S $3 AU53 NGC. Medium S. The 1856-S is the only
three-dollar issue with two different mintmark sizes. Most examples
are the Medium S variety, sometimes called the Large S. The present
coin has a small die break below the second L in DOLLARS,
reminiscent of the "Donkey Tail" VAM-1A 1887 Morgan dollar. Wear is
evident on Liberty's hair, but the tan-gold surfaces show minimal
blemishes, and luster emerges from design recesses.(Registry values: N1793)Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25M9, PCGS# 7975, Greysheet# 8664)
