Near-Mint 1856-S Three Dollar

1856-S $3 AU58 NGC. Medium S. Although Philadelphia struck three dollar gold pieces annually between 1854 and 1889, San Francisco coinage was limited to only five issues, excluding the unique 1870-S. The combined mintage of the denomination at San Francisco was 62,100 pieces, which is less than the 1856-S quarter eagle mintage, and approximately 5% of the mintage of the 1856-S double eagle. This is a surprisingly mark-free example that has substantial luster and only faint wear on the hair and eyebrow.(Registry values: N1793)
