    Description

    1856-S Three Dollar Gold, MS61
    Conditionally Rare Branch Mint Issue

1856-S $3 MS61 PCGS. Medium S. There are many low-mintage dates in the three dollar gold series, but the San Francisco issues are among the rarest in Mint State condition. Gold circulated extensively in the West during and following the Gold Rush, and few representatives of any denomination were set aside for future collectors.

Of the four S-mint issues in the series, the 1856-S had the highest mintage (34,500 pieces), and is by extension the most plentiful, but even it is rare at the Mint State level. This representative displays minimally abraded surfaces and soft lemon-gold luster. The wreath bow is not fully defined, as usual, though the strike is otherwise well-executed. A pleasing Mint State example of this elusive San Francisco issue. Population: 4 in 61, 8 finer (9/14).(Registry values: N4719) (NGC ID# 25M9, PCGS# 7975)

    Weight: 5.02 grams

    Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
