Lustrous MS62 1856-S Three Dollar

1856-S $3 MS62 NGC. Medium S. In the coinage-starved environment of California in the mid-1850s, any government coin, even something as odd as a three dollar gold piece, found ready acceptance in commerce. Garrett and Guth note about this issue: "Easy to obtain in circulated grades, the 1856-S becomes a real rarity in Mint State, with just over two-dozen coins certified in Uncirculated condition." As an MS62 survivor, this piece is ahead of the curve, and its eye appeal is solid, thanks to swirling, dusky yellow-gold luster and strong striking definition. Census: 3 in 62, 9 finer (8/09).(Registry values: N4719)
