1857-S Three Dollar, AU53
Better Old West Issue
1857-S $3 AU53 NGC. The 1857-S has less than half the
mintage of its 1856-S predecessor. According to the 2024 Guide
Book, 14,000 pieces were struck. PCGS Coin Facts states a
slightly higher production, 14,250 pieces. In either event, few
were set aside, and AU examples are elusive. The present coin
displays luster within the legends, though wear is noticeable on
the wreath and portrait. No marks are consequential. Census: 31 in
