    Description

Superb 1859 Three Dollar--The Finest Certified By Either Service

1859 MS 66 NGC. With a mintage of 15,638 pieces, ninth highest in the series, one would expect there to be quite a few survivors of this date. This is true in lower grades, but above XF the 1859 is a very scarce issue. In fact, Akers ranked it as 12th in the series according to rarity by average grade. This is a phenomenal quality early three, a coin of unsurpassable beauty and technical perfection. The fields are heavily striated, yielding a bright, reflective sheen on each side. Generally well defined on the devices with only slight softness noted on the trailing hair curls and on the bow at the bottom of the reverse. The only surface blemish of note is a dark spot at the bottom of the R in AMERICA. This is the only MS 66 certified by either of the major grading services (7/98). (NGC ID# 7K5K, PCGS# 7979)
