Description

1861 Gold Three Dollar, AU55
Briefly Circulated, Light Patina

1861 $3 AU55 NGC. The Philadelphia Mint was busy striking a vast mintage of double eagles in 1861 (nearly 3 million pieces) but few three dollar gold pieces -- just 5,969 coins, most of which disappeared into Civil War hoards soon after payout from the Mint. The fields are lightly abraded with a semireflective sheen and no large marks. Pale wheat-gold surfaces retain a few faint traces of luster.
