Description

1861 Gold Three Dollar, AU55
Appealing for the Grade

1861 $3 AU55 NGC. The 1861 three dollar gold's mintage of 5,959 pieces blends in well with the many other low-mintage dates in the series, but this Civil War-era issue was not nearly as well-saved as most issues from the following decades. The 1861 three is scarce in all Mint State grades, and high-end AU coins are objects of great desire among budget-conscious collectors. This piece displays well-detailed motifs and bright yellow-gold surfaces. Light chatter in the fields is consistent with the grade.
